History

A Legacy of Aviation Excellence

The Ninety-Nines was founded on November 2, 1929, at Curtiss Field in Valley Stream, New York, when 117 women pilots gathered to support one another, advance aviation, and document the achievements of women in the field. Among the early leaders was Louise Thaden, who served as the first Secretary, playing a pivotal role in keeping the group united during its formative years.

Key Milestones:

  • 1931: Amelia Earhart was elected the first President, and the name "Ninety-Nines" was chosen to honor the 99 charter members.
  • Membership Growth: Initially open to licensed pilots, the organization now welcomes women with student pilot certificates.
  • Legacy: The founding principles of mutual support, education, and advancement continue to inspire and guide The Ninety-Nines today.

SONG OF THE NINETY-NINES ©

The "Song of The Ninety-Nines," written by Dick Ballou in 1941, became the organization's official song during the annual meeting in Albuquerque, NM.

Lyrics:
"In the air, everywhere,
It's the song of The Ninety-Nines.
Wings in flight, day and night,
With the song of The Ninety-Nines.
On the line, fliers fine,
Ships and spirits tuned in rhyme,
Keep that formation over the nation
With the song of The Ninety-Nines." ©

The song, performed by Donna Cox with piano accompaniment by Kayla Paulk, celebrates the spirit of unity and passion among women pilots.
